Karkat Vantas, the Blatherer is so low on the hemospecttrum that he doesn’t actually have a job. He survives by talking in ALL CAPS to anyone he meets on the street, and they pay him or feed him to make him shut up. His cranky attitude has landed him permanently in the village stocks where he shouts a lot about how unfair the world is. Luckily, no one else really bothers to listen. Sometimes, though, he shows a more sensitive side. They say he actually behaves when a certain judge, Terezi Pyrope, wanders in to check on the prisoners.

In this universe, steam power (much like nuclear power) was invented during war that destroyed the earth’s surface. Thus, people created great engines to lift islands of arable land into the sky. This resulted in two classes of people: those who live on the sky islands and those who power the steam engines that keep it afloat. Body modification with steam-powered accessories has become the norm to help people survive with their minimal resources.
