WaP - 79. Starvation by fictograph WaP - 79. Starvation by fictograph
“You may drink water, but you may not eat for three days. On the last, you will not feel starvation in your stomach. You will feel it in your blood and your soul. To be Alisian, you must understand that hunger.”

Faminan.” Starvation - 079/100 Themes.

Having grown up outside of Alisian society, Rivek was never taught to properly control of his power. Uncontrolled dark-mages go on rampant killing sprees. Through Mirab’s coercion, Rivek begins training with an Alisian priestess, Athe. She has techniques that let her control her energy absorption rate at will, thus giving her maximum control over her dark-magic abilities. This control means she can both live for long periods of time without sustenance as well as suck someone’s life-force out completely. As a priestess, it is her duty to teach these techniques to others. And the first step is to experience, understand, and accept what is considered monstrous: the dark-mage body and its infinite hunger for magic.

Scar branding and starvation learnings...these Alisians are one hell of a tough race. Love this priestess Athe's design.

Yeah. Originally they were modeled after elves, but I was like "no, that's dumb." Now, they're a nomadic, military society with minor references to Sparta and Israel.

Sparta and Israel, I can see where the toughness and importance of rituals/traditions come from then.

I don't know how much flack I'll get from this, but there are strong correlations between Alisian society and Judaism. It's semi-intentional. I'm not like, trying to specifically do allegory, but I grew up with a lot of Jews. My best friends happen to be Jewish guys and obviously, the men in my story (like Riv) draw from them.

So, I guess it's confession time: I'm not original - I just pick interesting shit from real life!

At base, Alisain religion is an old, much more ritualistic and symbolism-heavy version of the existing mainstream religion. It features a lot of smaller gods as well.

However, smart people used religion to unite people in a period of political upheaval, so anybody who didn't follow this became Alisians. Given the tie between religion and politics, the Alisians were forced (and in part, self-segregated) to live in segregated communities, but since they were from all different areas, they never formed their own established nation (like Romani and Jewish people in medieval Europe). Similarly to how Jews were relegated to doing 'un-Christian' jobs like money-lending, Alisians survive by doing 'dirty work' (assassination, thievery, prostitution). There's a different guild with a different specialization in each nation. In addition, as a marginalized people, they tend to be xenophobic, distrustful, very family loyal and very militaristic. I imagine they fight using variations of Krav Maga which was developed to defend Israelis - and since it it's about purely defense, there's like... no formality towards the opponent like Asian martial arts. It's all about just taking them the hell out.

But, ROFLMAO - their symbol is a six-pointed star. (Take the circle off Riv's tattoo and you'll see what I mean.) 'Alisian' is also a bastardization of the word 'Elysium' which is where Greek warriors went after they died.

Well there's nothing wrong from picking things up from real life, where the hell else would we get inspiration? I guess if you're worried about getting flack at the similarities, I think what makes people mad is when cultures are taken and applied into with no real worldbuilding logic to it. And I think you've developed this world pretty well enough that things are there not just because 'it's cool' and whatnot.

Also if you're a little worried though feel free to hide these two comments so it's not spoilerrific or just note me next time. :D

I much like this new character. They're both so pretty! (Sorry, Riv, I'm talking about the ladies this time.) I also like Riv not going on uncontrollable killing sprees. :XD:

Haha. Mirab is his sister, so he'd still take that as a compliment.
